Based in granite warehouses overlooking St. Helier Marina, this museum brings legends and stories of the sea to life with colorful and fun exhibits.

Interactive displays and navigational tools in the Maritime Museum work together to form a lively picture of Jersey’s seafaring history. It has a focus on the senses, allowing you to hear, touch and smell the exhibits. Get to know the island’s marine past via models and memorabilia collected over centuries.

Inspect the Occupation Tapestry gallery, made up of 12 embroideries that depict life for islanders during the German occupation in World War II. The artworks were woven by locals and are made up of their personal memories. Learn about the life of famous sailor and Jersey local T.B. Davis. This 19th-century philanthropist launched important sea voyages and took part in yacht racing.

Examine tools and images that help explain the effects and practices of navigation and seafaring. A trip to the museum offers a lesson in tides as well as boat design and floatability. Let kids feel the might of a high-speed gale and play with the interactive exhibits in the Globe Room. See movies on natural history in the Cinema of the Sea.

Study the models of the famous ships that have visited the island’s shores. These include the HMS Jersey, the Red Cross Ship, Vega and Philippe de Carteret’s HMS Swallow.

Monday through Wednesday you can watch as the museum staff restore antique boats. Find out what it was like to work under Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died in his final victory, the Battle of Trafalgar.

The museum is open every day from mid March until early November, but only on Sundays in winter. It closes entirely for 2 weeks during the year-end holidays. There is a fee to enter, with discounts for students and seniors. Toddlers enter for free.

Find the Maritime Museum tucked between Old Harbour and St. Helier Harbour in southeastern Jersey. In the neighborhood, go to some of the nearby sights, such as the Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, the Waterfront Gardens and the South Hill Gardens.
