Whether you travel to Maribo with your family to go sightseeing or to enjoy the nature, you've come to the right place. Maribo has historical monuments such as its landmark, Maribo Cathedral, and the town hall, as well as three lakes surrounded by magnificent scenery. And that’s not all. Maribo is also the perfect starting point for a trip to Knuthenborg Safari Park – one of Denmark’s biggest attractions for children.
Maribo is historically a convent town that was built up around a large Bridgettine convent. Today, the only thing that remains is the convent church, Maribo Cathedral. Make sure you pay this beautiful church a visit, and don’t miss the organ and the grave of Leonora Christine, daughter of King Christian IV.
In Maribo you will also find the open air museum ‘The Old Houses’, as well as the art gallery Atelier Vognporten, and the cultural centre Hvedemagasinet. Maribo’s lake Sonderso is the perfect place for refreshing summer swims, and thanks to the facilities for canoe, kayak and pedal boat rentals, you can glide peacefully around on the lake. And don’t miss out on a trip to the Maribo Lakes Nature Park, where you can explore the trails that go all along the huge lakes on foot or by bike.
If you prefer something more relaxed, you can instead enjoy a trip on the pleasant tour boat Anemonen, which takes you on a 1-2-hour long tour of Sonderso that includes a stopover on the island of Borgo. The lakes here are home to an abundance of birds, including greylag geese and the magnificent white-tailed eagle, so be sure to have your camera and binoculars ready.
If you are on a weekend break in Maribo with your family, you can all share a fun day at the Knuthenborg Safari Park, where you watch free-ranging giraffes, gazelles and many other animals whilst driving through the savanna areas in your car.
Getting to Maribo is easy as the town acts as a hub right in the heart of Lolland, both in terms of roads and public transport. The local railway Lollandsbanen connects Maribo to Nykobing Falster, which is situated on the main line between Copenhagen and Hamburg in Germany, with frequent departures. Maribo is located 90 miles south-west of Copenhagen Airport.
Maribo is definitely a place worth a visit, with lots of things to do throughout your whole holiday.
