Board a scenic funicular or embark on a hike to reach this church overlooking the Swiss city of Locarno.

Madonna dei Sasso is one of the most photogenic attractions in the Locarno area. This is an extremely important religious site, considered the most famous pilgrim church in this part of the country. Perched high above the city on a mountaintop surrounded by forest, the pilgrimage church is a destination for people wanting to learn about the local religious history and architecture as well as those seeking the best view in Locarno.

The Madonna dei Sasso dates back more than five centuries, making it among the oldest structures in the area. Explore the church to discover the story of its foundation, said to come after a local Franciscan brother saw a vision of the Virgin Mary in the late 1400s. Embark on your own pilgrimage to see the historic architecture, generously decorated interior and sweeping views from the top of the church.

Admire the pastel yellow walls and terracotta roof of the church from its grounds. In summer the church walls beautifully complement the deep greens of the surrounding mountains and the lake below, while from December on they add some bright color in contrast with the snow-covered surroundings.

Climb to the viewing platform for one of the best photo opportunities in the area. Capture images of the mountain hamlet in a variety of lights. From the church you can see the Swiss Alps unfold before you, along with the lakeside city of Locarno. While in the church, admire the religious frescoes and other decorations that adorn the walls.

The Madonna dei Sasso is connected to central Locarno by a scenic funicular, which for many is half the experience of visiting the church. If you want some exercise, follow the walking trail to reach the church in approximately 20 minutes. The Madonna dei Sasso can be visited daily and the funicular runs every 15 minutes during peak season and every 30 minutes during winter.
