Ride the gondola around the lake, bring the kids to the castle playground and attend the opera in this multifaceted park.

Luisenpark Gardens is a vast city park with a butterfly house, a lake and plenty of fun activities for kids. Comprising 100 acres (42 hectares), the park has a Chinese garden, a rose garden and diverse and plentiful vegetation. Plan for hours of enjoyment for the whole family.

Have a picnic with your family in the scenic and tranquil environment of the Kutzerweiher Lake. Bring your kids on the gondolettas that are pulled on a looped tour of the lake by underwater cables. Encounter some of the animals that roam the park, such as pink flamingoes and white storks.

Make your way to the open-air stage, which hosts operas, concerts and theatrical productions. It has about 1,000 seats. Stroll through the greenhouse, which showcases varied exotic plants from around the world. The park also has bird displays, a butterfly house and aquariums.

Spend time in the large playground and grassy fields of the Spielwiese. Look around the domestic animal enclosures and inspect multiple statues along the Heinrich-Vetter-Weg trail. Use your feet to experience nature on the barefoot trail.

Admire the many quaint relics in the peaceful Chinese Garden. See the charming Chinese teahouse. In winter, the gardens are often covered in snow, generating an enchanting atmosphere.

Among the park’s highlights is the Fernmeldeturm telecommunications tower. Ascend to the summit for the rotating restaurant with views from a height of 410 feet (125 meters).

The park dates back to the final decade of the 19th century and is named after Luise Marie Elisabeth of Prussia, who was the grand duchess of Baden. There is an entry fee, which is discounted for children and students, plus additional fees for specific activities.

Find the Luisenpark Gardens on the southern bank of the Neckar River in the eastern part of Mannheim, just northwest of City Airport Mannheim. Take a bus to a surrounding stop or a tram to the Carl-Benz Station or the Technoseum Süd. See landmarks in the area, such as the Carl-Benz Stadion soccer stadium and the Planetarium Mannheim on the pretty Europaplatz palazzo lawn.
