Ludvika is a scenic city in the southern part of the province of Dalarna, 30 miles from Borlange and 43 miles from Falun. The nearby lakes, Vasman and Ovre Hillen, are joined by Ludvika River, which you can enjoy from the footbridge above the water. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this unspoilt location offers several tranquil swimming and fishing spots worth visiting during your weekend trip to Ludvika. There is also a wealth of cultural activities to enjoy here.
Ludvika Ulrika Kyrka, a church from the late 1700s, is located next to the district Hammarbacken. Get an insight into the industrial history of Dalarna at the open-air museum Ludvika Gammelgard. This includes the striking red timber buildings known as Gruvmuseet and Bergsmansgarden. In the summer you can order some coffee and cake at the picturesque café, soak up the smells from the herbal garden and watch the farm animals.
Swedish summer is also the perfect time to go hiking, paddling and horseback riding in Safsen, an area which turns into a gorgeous ski resort during winter. If you prefer cross-country skiing, Ljungasen is the place for you – and you can finish your outdoor adventures with hot waffles served in the charming cottage Vaffelstugan.
Two of the best places for wild swimming are Skuthamn and Jagarnas. Skuthamn is the most central of the two and has a beach volleyball court where you can practice your skills. In Jagarnas there is both deep and shallow water separated by a jetty. You can go swimming at the sports centre Ludvika Sporthall if you are considering a winter time weekend package to Ludvika.
Visit Dan Andersson Museum if you want to find out more about a Swedish writer and poet who during his short life wrote some truly fascinating works. The gallery Sadesmagasinet in Hammarbacken shows interesting art exhibitions and displays an apartment with interiors from the turn of the century. Remember to find out what is on at the concert hall Casells in Grangesberg. The acoustics are outstanding and the striking façade is inspired by the Bank of England in London.
