Enjoy a day of sun and surf at this beautiful beach, which is one of the few places on the U.S. west coast where you can watch the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean.

It is easy to see why visitors and local residents alike have flocked to Lovers Point Park and Beach for over a century. With myriad things to see and do, this is the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of mid-coast California.

Lovers Point has a remarkable east-facing position, offering a view of the sun rising over the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy this unusual opportunity since most of California generally has only sunsets over the ocean.

Spread your towel in the sand or swim in the blue Pacific waters. Watch surfers conquer the waves offshore. Have a sunny picnic in the grassy lawn area or play a game of beach volleyball. Because of its diverse marine life, Lovers Point is popular with scuba divers and fishermen.

For the best views, head to the rocks at the end of the point. After a fairly easy climb, enjoy spectacular views of Monterey Bay.

A network of trails makes this a popular spot for bikers and runners. For more of an excursion, continue along the paths all the way to downtown Monterey.

Very few commercial structures block the view at Lovers Point. However, if you get hungry or thirsty, look for the small snack bar. Rent bikes, kayaks and other watersport equipment at the on-site shop. The area also has restroom facilities.

Visit Lovers Point during daylight hours throughout the year. Note that there is rarely a lifeguard on duty, so swim or surf at your own risk. If you travel here in late July, watch the Feast of Lantern procession to the ocean and see the Royal Court of the festival in colorful Chinese costumes.

Lovers Point is just a 10-minute drive from downtown Monterey. There is a large parking lot, which fills up quickly on weekends. If this happens, park on nearby Ocean View Boulevard.

Enjoy one of the most beautiful sections of California’s coastline at picturesque Lovers Point Park and Beach. Make sure to bring your camera because everywhere you look is a scene worthy of a photo.
