Go surfing or snorkeling at one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil after meeting monkeys and parrots in the forest.

The most famous beach on Ilha Grande, Lopes Mendes Beach lives up to its reputation as a sandy haven with fluffy white sand and crystalline water. The wide strand is almost miles (3 kilometers) long and lies at the end of a hilly trail through dense thickets of tropical forests. Take photos of this iconic stretch of sand, whose beauty is ample reward for the rigorous journey.

Enjoy the utter serenity of this tranquil beach, which is free of structures, boats and Jet Skis. Bring any equipment you might want, such as deck chairs, to this isolated bay as you won’t find any stands selling or renting these items. You can purchase snacks and drinks, including alcoholic beverages, from the few small stalls on site. Rent short or long boards here to take out on the consistent waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Sunbathe and listen to the sound of the soothing waves and accompanying wind. Beachcomb for shells and other aquatic treasures on this long beach. The sand may feel powdery like fresh snow beneath your feet. Cool down with a swim in the refreshing water or jump into the waves with your family. Relax with a book in the shaded section by the trees at the back of the beach.

Embark on a hike along the steep trails in the forest. Brown howler monkeys, red-browed parrots and lizards are among the exotic creatures that live between the trees. Along the way, stop at some of the smaller and lesser-known beaches, which are also quite beautiful.

Lopes Mendes Beach is on the eastern flank of the picturesque landmass of Ilha Grande. Take a boat from Vila do Abraão to Pouso Beach and hike about 20 minutes through the forest to Lopes Mendes Beach, which faces south toward the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, you can hike through the Atlantic rainforest for 2 to 3 hours to get here from town. Visit nearby highlights, including the Ponta dos Castelhanos, Santo Antonio Beach and Caxadaço Beach with a guide.
