A convergence of climates and geographical landscapes makes exploring this high-altitude province a dramatic visual adventure.

Discover the microclimates created where Ecuador’s Andes Ranges meet the dense Amazon Rainforest in the province of Loja. Dominating an Andean valley at an elevation of more than 7,300 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level, Loja was once a center for Spanish colonialists. Its towns and cities are speckled with colonial architecture and grand Catholic churches. Many visitors to the province base themselves in the provincial capital, also named Loja. However, if you want to explore the surrounding valley, find the laid-back Vilcabamba, a great resting place.

The major attraction in Loja province is the stunning Podocarpus National Park. Just a short drive from the capital, the national park is home to mountain tapir, jaguars and bears alongside more than 550 species of birds. Bring your binoculars to look for colorful parrots as you walk the Cloud Forest Trail. Head out overnight along the Viewpoints Trail to reach Godfather Lake. Camping is available within the park. However, come prepared for damp conditions caused by the long wet season.

Make your way to Vilcabamba, a popular town with a surprisingly old population. Nestled within a low point of the Andes, the area is colloquially referred to as the Valley of Longevity. Many of its residents reputedly live to more than 100 years old. Appreciate the year-round good weather and plethora of hot springs as you enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and coffee plantations.

In the eastern part of the province find the capital, Loja, a thriving university city with stunning colonial architecture. Visit a renowned music conservatory to discover why the city is referred to as the music capital of Ecuador. Wander Loja’s streets to understand why its people are considered some of the country’s most hospitable.

Buses serve the province of Loja. Make connections from Cuenca or Piura, across the border in Peru. Alternatively, fly to La Toma airport, just a 40-minute drive from the city of Loja.
