Disappointed- the room is dated and drab. Dark and small. Mould round shower. Not Luxury as sold on Expedia! Staff seem miserable. Breakfast not bad but same. Overall I would rate this a 3* and not value for what you pay.

Dear Freda,We are truly sorry to hear about your disappointment and would like to address a few points. Lisbon, like Rome, is a city of hills, and our 18th-century building is uniquely situated on the historic site of the Royal Palace's kitchens, tucked away in a quiet spot within the walls of São Jorge Castle, at the top of the Alfama neighborhood. Various public transportation options are available to reach this historic birthplace of Lisbon. At Solar do Castelo Inn, we aim to immerse Guests in a romantic, medieval setting while offering modern comforts. Each of our rooms, from the cozy Petite Castelo Rooms to the Alfama Rooms, has its own character while staying true to this ambiance. We are not a luxury hotel, nor do we aspire to be one; our website and all communications emphasize our commitment to substance and our unique philosophy. We regret that we did not meet your expectations, and we appreciate your feedback. We will continue working hard to ensure each Guest has a pleasant stay.Kind regards,Diogo LaranjoGeneral Manager

The property is beautiful, and the staff is wonderful and gracious. Our room was clean and comfortable, but a bit small (we had nowhere to comfortably put our full size luggage) - just a note if you are a heavy packer like us, you may need to upgrade to a larger room! We loved the peacocks and the courtyard! We had some issues with taxis not being willing to go all the way to the hotel, so they would drop us off at the bottom of the hills and we would need to walk the rest of the way. This was NOT a hotel issue, but if you are unable to walk up the steep hills it may be a problem.

I don't typically leave reviews but we really had an outstanding experience at this hotel so I felt compelled to share! To start, you should know that the "free airport transportation" is for the journey TO the hotel only (which is not made clear in the Expedia listing). We originally wanted transportation to the airport after our stay, but there is very good reason to accept their transportation TO the hotel. It is within the castle walls where vehicles (except residents and taxis) are not allowed. The streets are VERY narrow and it's at the top of the hill, so you don't want to have to walk! Our taxi driver was very reluctant to take us there, so their shuttle service would have been helpful. I would definitely recommend accepting their transportation to the hotel. Aside from that, the area is VERY busy with tourists and crowds, however the minute you step through the hotel doors you will find instant calm and quiet! It is a really tranquil spot in the middle of a really busy area! If you want to be close to all of the major sights, but not feel like you're staying in a tourist trap, this is the place to be! The staff was incredible. We asked them for a dinner recommendation and they not only gave us a great suggestion but they made a reservation for us. The Fado restaurant they suggested ended up being the highlight of our two week travels and by far the best meal we had! I can't recommend Solar Do Castelo highly enough!

Dear Kristen, Thank you so much for sharing such lovely review! It brings us great joy to know that you were able to immerse yourself in the romantic and magical atmosphere of our Solar do Castelo Inn. Thank you so much for your kind words, especially regarding our staff, which is proudly our most important asset! Solar do Castelo is nestled inside the walls of St. George’s Castle, which as you mention, is a peaceful hideaway in our lively city. Our ambiance highlights the contemporary nature of the small palace’s revitalization while simultaneously stressing its medieval origins. The most attractive way to explore these neighbourhoods, is to take a public transport to the top of the various hills and leisurely walking down its narrow streets, savouring the scenic vistas and the charming details of its historic neighbourhoods. As you mentioned, traffic to our place is restricted to locals, taxis and some Ubers with a special licence and for that reason we can arrange a private transfer from the airport. Our reception staff would be happy to assist you with anything you need. It was our pleasure to welcome you and we hope to see you again in the future and provide you another memorable experience!Warm regards,Diogo LaranjoGeneral Manager

Folks were wonderful. Breakfast was great. Our ride from the cruise port to the hotel and then to the airport were great and the driver was very courteous (and nice!) We will be back.

I loved this hotel! Central in the Alfama, walking distance to everything, beautiful patio with the odd peacock strolling around to enjoy the beautiful breakfast or a glass of wine in the evening. Comfy beds and well appointed rooms. An oasis in the castle. Loved every moment of my stay. I hope I have an opportunity to return again! The only thing I would say is you have mobility issues getting to the hotel might be an issue.
