Trace Leeds’ fascinating history at this pretty civic square in the heart of the city, where you can see diverse architectural styles and a row of historic statues.

Leeds City Square is a central public square ringed by historic buildings and dotted with intriguing monuments. Learn about the local history when you stroll around this atmospheric civic square, taking in views of the cityscape and its varied architecture. Sit by the fountain and see Victorian architectural masterpieces alongside designs dating back to the 1930s and recent decades. The square is a popular spot for community events and local gatherings.

Take a moment to explore Leeds City Square when you’re strolling through the city center. The spacious square is surrounded by intriguing buildings, such as the Old Post Office. This magnificent heritage building dates back to 1896 and was once the city’s bustling postal system and telephone exchange. Today, it contains restaurants and a collection of serviced apartments. The large fir tree in front of the building is annually decorated with bright baubles and tinsel for Christmas.

Look across the road and you’ll see the distinctive 1930s architecture of The Queens Hotel. The elegant building has welcomed several famous visitors and dignitaries to Leeds over the decades. To the east, you’ll see Mill Hill Chapel, a landmark Gothic-style chapel that dates back to 1848.

You’ll also find a selection of statues depicting famous characters from Leeds and beyond. The most prominent of these is the Black Prince on horseback, a bronze rendition of the medieval Prince Edward. See statues of further notable local figures, as well as eight nymphs. Those who are feeling adventurous can embark on the 104-mile (167-kilometer) long distance walking trail, the White Rose Way, from the Black Prince statue. This trail leads through agricultural plains and lush moors to Scarborough.

There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and intriguing shops dotted around the square. Grab a take-away coffee and take a seat on one of the park benches. Watch locals and visitors coming and going from the square or emerging from the Leeds Railway Station. Leeds City Square is located in the heart of the city, adjacent to the main railway hub. It is free to visit at any time of day.
