Las Caletas Beach

This secluded beach, once owned by a Hollywood legend, is perfect for swimming, snorkeling and enjoying the region’s fresh seafood.

Las Caletas is a half-mile (800-meter) stretch of secluded beach perfect for relaxation, water sports and hiking. Set up a hammock on the beach or enjoy a seafood meal at one of the restaurants with water views. If you’re feeling more active, swim, snorkel or hike though the jungle.

Las Caletas was originally the private home of Hollywood movie producer, director and actor John Huston, known for films such as The Maltese Falcon and The Misfits. He leased the area from a local indigenous tribe when it was largely uninhabited.

Today the beach is run by a private company, Vallarta Adventures. It remains quiet and secluded, with only around 150 people allowed on the beach at a time. The shoreline is sandy, with rocky outcrops and turquoise water. Swimming, snorkeling and paddle boarding are popular activities. All equipment is available from the beach staff, although for diving you should book online ahead of time to secure a place.

There is also entertainment away from the water. Visit the beach’s private zoo to meet local parrots, monkeys, snakes and other animals. The kid’s adventure park is a jungle walking trail high in the trees. Children aged four to 11 are strapped in via ropes that allow them to walk safely through the jungle canopy. On the trail, they learn about the native vegetation and animals around them.

Go hiking through the jungle behind the beach and discover more local bird and plant life. Cooking classes are also offered, so you can learn how to cook fresh seafood paella under the guidance of a professional chef.

Las Caletas is located in the Bay of Banderas, approximately 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Puerto Vallarta. The beach is only accessible by water. Vallarta Adventures catamarans leave in the morning from Puerto Vallarta Marina and take about 45 minutes to get to the beach. Keep an eye out for whales during the boat ride. The tour price is substantial, but it includes all food, drinks and water-sports equipment.
