Get the perfect introduction to the gorgeous waterfront town of Lakes Entrance when you visit the hilltop that looks out over the surrounding waterways and dunes.

The Lakes Entrance Lookout is the ideal spot to begin your adventure in the waterfront resort town and fishing port, as well as the perfect place to mark the end of a fun-filled vacation. Make your way up to the hilltop lookout and enjoy sweeping views across the town’s breathtaking lake shores, coastal heathlands and the endless blue horizon of Bass Strait.

You can’t miss the Lakes Entrance Lookout as you enter the town from the west. Pass by the sign that welcomes you into the pretty coastal town and watch for the blue-and-yellow lookout platform. Walk up the stairway that leads up to the observation deck and take in the expansive views across the coast. The lookout has binoculars for peering into the distance to see passing boats and shorebirds by the water’s edge. Read the informative plaques that line the platform’s base and see if you can spot Lakes Entrance’s landmark sights.

Look southeast to see Rigby Island and the point where the two landmasses almost meet, known as the Narrows. The Rigby Island Gippsland Lakes Reserve protects the pristine coastal heathland. Turn west to see the shallow waters of the channel and the sandbanks that rise up into golden dunes.

Use the binoculars and watch as yachts and fishing boats sail through the narrow waterways or pass through the man-made channel that connects Lakes Entrance to the open ocean of Bass Strait.

The Lakes Entrance Lookout is situated on the hilltop that overlooks the town toward the east. It is easy to reach by car and has free on-site parking. Alternatively, you can catch the local bus to the lookout by disembarking at the Kalimna Bus Stop. The lookout is free to visit. While in the area, be sure to check out the Jemmy’s Point Lookout located nearby. This observation tower presents another perspective on the endless coastline surrounding Lakes Entrance and is equipped with a map to help you point out the different highlights in the surrounding landscape.
