Lake Morton

Dense pine forest and a snow-capped mountains surround the glimmering surface of the water, beneath which largemouth bass and rainbow trout flourish.

Lake Morton is a vast and serene setting in the midst of picturesque woodland in the heart of Washington state. The dramatic snow-capped peak of Mt. Rainier appears to rise above the trees, providing excellent vistas from the lake. Go fishing in this tranquil basin of water for rainbow trout, largemouth bass and other freshwater fish.

The lake stretches across an area of 66 acres (27 hectares). Bring your kayak or canoe to take out on the placid surface. Dive into the cold water and swim around in this stunning setting. Once you’ve dried off on the shore, follow a trail through the forest composed mostly of pine trees. Extend your peaceful experience with a stay at one of the quaint homes in this forest.

Head south into Waldheim Acres Park and bring supplies for a picnic on the lawn. Practice your swing at the Druids Glen Golf Club.

Back at the lake, stay until sunset and watch the mountain peak become a looming silhouette against the dark red sky. In the afternoon, watch for expert hikers climbing to Mt. Rainier's summit of 14,410 feet (4,392 meters). The peak provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Note that the best period for catching largemouth bass is April through September, while rainbow trout are particularly abundant in May and October. The lake has a boat ramp and bathroom facilities.

Lake Morton lies toward the western edge of the state of Washington, in the northwestern corner of the U.S. Drive south from Seattle for 28 miles (45 kilometers) to this lake in the southern outskirts of Covington to get here in about 40 minutes. Leave your vehicle in the parking lot on the lake’s western shore.

While in the region, go to such surrounding sights as Soos Creek Park, the Danville-Georgetown Open Space and Flaming Geyser Park.
