Spend some time at one of Minneapolis’ most popular recreational areas and go sailing and swimming in the still waters or discover the trails on the foreshore.

Lake Harriet is a gorgeous getaway in southwestern Minneapolis. Check out the lake’s two swimming beaches and explore its perimeter on a walking or cycling trail. Lake Harriet’s foreshore parkway presents extensive views across the water, as well as plenty of space to relax, enjoy a picnic or people-watch. Launch a boat or a paddleboard and experience the lake’s beauty from the water.

Make your way to the protected parkland that encircles the lake and take in the view from lakeshore. This area is part of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, a much-loved public recreation area in the city. Enjoy the scenery by exploring the trails that loop the lake. The walking trail and the separate cycling trail are approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) in length.

If the sun is shining, go for a swim at one of the lake’s beaches. These are situated at the north and southeast sections of the lake. Rent a boat, kayak or paddleboard and go on an adventure across the waters. Sailing lessons are also available for children and adults wanting to learn new skills on the water. Drop a line off the long fishing pier and you might hook northern pike, walleye, yellow perch or black crappie. Be sure to check guideline restrictions before cooking your catch.

The northern edge of the lake features a collection of pretty gardens. Stroll through Lyndale Park, the Peace Garden, the Thomas Sadler Roberts Bird Sanctuary and a magnificent collection of roses. Take the kids to see the tiny garden and front door of the Elf House in the trunk of a tree.

Lake Harriet’s bandshell is located on the northern edge of the lake. See a summer concert in this distinctive public pavilion, which has picnic facilities and a concession stand. In winter, bring the kids to the annual Kite Festival.

The lake is easy to reach via the convenient scenic parkway that loops around the body of water. You can also reach Lake Harriet via the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line, which connects the lake to nearby Lake Calhoun. The lake and park are free to visit at any time.
