An abundance of colorful sights, sounds and smells welcomes you as you enter the market. Stroll between the stalls and listen as the energetic sellers endeavor to tempt you to buy their wares. Smell the aromas of cocoa and coffee beans that fill the air. Be dazzled by the array of colors, typical of an Andean-city market.
Find jewelry, such as bohemian-style bracelets, silver rings and necklaces, plus leather goods and ceramics. Check out the blankets, ponchos, scarfs and sweaters made from alpaca and llama wool. Shop for Panama hats, handcrafted wooden toys and musical instruments. All items should be bargained for so engage in haggling with the sellers and attempt to get a lower price.
Situated in the lively Mariscal district, the Mercado Artesanal La Mariscal is about a 10-minute drive from Quito’s Centro Histórico (Historic Center). Public buses stop close to the market and connect with Quito’s main tourist areas. While here, you might want to visit other attractions in Mariscal. Relax in the tree-shaded El Ejido Park, which hosts regular open-air art exhibitions. Alternatively, sample the nightlife of Foch Square.
The market is open daily and admission is free. It presents a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs if you don’t have the time to visit the historic Otavalo Market, a 2-hour drive north of Quito.
