The province of Cordoba is known for its mosque, but also for its many towns and villages. One of them is La Carlota, uniquely picturesque and authentic. Reserve one of ourtrips to La Carlota and explore this part of Spanish geography that will make an impression on you.
The origins of La Carlota date back to 1767, when King Carlos III developed a project called "Nuevas Poblaciones", whose objective was to repopulate areas of Andalusia, improve agricultural production and protect El Camino Real from Madrid to Cadiz. One of the resulting municipalities of the project was La Carlota, which received its name in honour of the king. Today, it is a municipality of just over 12,000 inhabitants.
Without a doubt, the nerve centre of the town is the Church Square, the starting point for all its streets. The roads are straight and the municipality itself is laid out in a grid, typical of the enlightened rationalism of the time. In this lively square is the Church of Immaculate Conception, a meeting place for parishioners that stands out for its bell towers and its white façade.
In this square you will find other buildings that have been in La Carlota since its foundation, such as the first residence of the sub-delegate Quintanilla, which is today a private residence. Quintanilla worked for the central government and was put in charge of managing the New Populations project. His place of work was the Government's Subdelegate Palace, an imposing building from the 1770s. Nowadays it is the official seat of the town hall and, with luck you can visit its interior.
