Marvel at the opulence of this incredible pink palace, a fantastic example of Rococo architecture and a seat of political power.

Trier is full of impressive historic sites, but the Kurfürstliches Palais, or Electoral palace, is one of the most spectacular. Come here to wander beautifully manicured grounds and admire the elaborate exterior architecture before heading inside to discover the history of this significant building.

Electors and Archbishops carried out the business of governing here for many years. Today, the building remains a site of political significance, housing local government offices. The building is still considered an exceptional example of Rococo architecture. The earliest sections of the palace, the north and east wings, date back to the early 17th century. Several additions have been made to the structure over time, with the distinctive pink south wing that is shown in most photos of the building having been built in 1756. Walk up the steps that lead from the lush green lawn to the doorway and admire the elegant statues that enhance this wing. These were created by noted sculptor Ferdinand Tietz.

Step inside the palace to be dazzled with even more opulence. Marble and gold abound, and every detail is ornate. Pay particular attention to the splendid staircase located in the south wing, one of the palace’s most famous features. To ensure you don’t miss a single thing while you’re exploring the building, consider booking a place on one of the regular guided tours.

Check if any events are scheduled to take place at the palace before you visit. Concerts are sometimes held in its grand interior. Visit in the summer and you may also have the chance to see an outdoor music event in the beautiful grounds.

Take the time to visit another historic attraction in the area, the Konstantinbasilika, or Basilica of Constantine. It stands directly next to the Kurfürstliches Palais. This 4th-century church is one of Trier’s best-known tourist sights. Despite having stood for well over 1,500 years, it remains incredibly well preserved.

Make sure you check opening times before you visit the Kurfürstliches Palais. This is a functioning government building, so hours vary. Find the palace to the southeast of the town center, within just a few minutes’ walk of most of Trier’s other major attractions.
