Take a break from the hustle and bustle of central Hong Kong to enjoy a peaceful walk in this verdant park.

Kowloon Park has been transformed from the former site of a British military base into one of the city’s most attractive green spaces, thanks to an imaginative programme of redevelopment in the 1970s funded by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. The 13.5-hectare site, which was unusually spacious in an already overcrowded city where most new developments are only allowed to expand vertically, offered a rare opportunity to create a beautiful and well-appointed new recreation facility. Not surprisingly, it was an immediate hit with residents and visitors alike.Occupying a scenic position overlooking Victoria Harbour, the park’s central location makes it an ideal stop-off point on shopping or sightseeing trips. Stroll along the paved walkways past manicured flower beds and lawns to the piazza, where outdoor concerts and other events are regularly held. Stop to admire the classical Chinese garden, where you will be entertained by the terrapins as they scurry over the cascades of the lotus pond, or pause to absorb the fragrant scents emanating from the rose garden. The Sculpture Walk features a permanent display of artworks, and also mounts temporary exhibitions by local and international artists. The playground, maze garden and mini soccer field are popular with younger visitors. On most Sundays you can watch free performances of kung fu and lion dance – check the park’s website for full details of forthcoming events. The park contains a well-appointed sports centre and indoor swimming complex with four heated pools, including the Olympic-sized main pool, which hosts international competitions from time to time. There are also outdoor pools that open during the warm summer months only. Check the Leisure and Cultural Services Department website for opening times and admission prices.Make your way to Kowloon Park by MTR, alighting at Tsim Sha Tsui station and using Exit A1.
