Climb to the summit of a forested plateau to enter one of Europe’s largest castles and take in excellent views of the river and valley beyond.

Koenigstein is an enchanting hamlet comprising of traditional German cottages on a bend in the River Elbe. Forests on the Elbe Sandstone Mountains loom over the village, which is best known for the tremendous Koenigstein Fortress. Amble along the riverside promenade for views of the woodland and meadows that extend from the waters’ edge.

Visit the spectacular fortress, which presides over the village from a plateau overlooking the river. The structure is among the largest of its kind in Europe and dates back 750 years. Relish the view of the lush green valley from the fortress at height of 790 feet (240 meters) above the river.

Explore a network of tunnels and admire the fortress’s range of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and 19th-century styles. Take a guided tour or relax with snacks and drinks in the castle’s restaurant.

Today, the fortress contains exhibitions within its historic buildings, such as the Treasury House, the Commander’s House and the Well House. Find out about the construction of the building in the George’s Castle exhibit, delve into the eerie Barrel Cellar and relish the serenity of the Commander’s Garden.

Rent audio guides for a comprehensive understanding of the exhibits. Stop at the gift shop and peruse the items for sale.

Stay the night at the campsite on the southern flank of the river. Use Koenigstein as a starting point to experience the stunning natural surroundings.

Expect fairly cold weather in winter, with flurries of snow that cover the castle. Summers are pleasant with warm and dry days extending into September.

The town is situated nearby the Czech border in the Saxony region of eastern Germany. It is a 45-minute drive southeast from Dresden Airport, which connects to international destinations around Europe. Travel by boat to the nearby town of Bad SchandauOpens in a new window and its adjacent Saxon Switzerland National ParkOpens in a new window.

The impressive fortress and riverside scenery put the little village of Koenigstein on the map.
