Marvel at the modern design of one of the largest mosques in the world, which welcomes about 24,000 worshippers at a time.

The largest mosque in Ankara, Kocatepe Mosque strikes an imposing chord with its rising minarets and tiers of domes. It has become an icon in the city’s skyline, visible from most parts of the city on a clear day. Be one of the 24,000 visitors that the enormous mosque can accommodate at one time.

Construction of the impressive spiritual center took about two decades to complete. It was rebuilt twice in varying styles before finding its current neoclassical Ottoman design.

The mosque's inspiring design, which includes many tiers ornate with elegant features, is a move away from tradition and has split opinion over the years. Decide for yourself whether its divisive look is too contemporary or is a fine example of Modern Islamic design.

Gaze up at the domes and spires that generate an almost mock-Gothic quality. The four minarets climb to a height of 289 feet (88 meters). Admire the graceful balcony that sits above the arches, several stylish sets of steps and the main entrance.

As you enter the spiritual structure, notice the lavish décor around you. Marvel at the artwork of the central dome and the use of marble and tinted windows. Look up at the ornamental ceiling and its chandelier and enjoy the feel of the red carpet beneath you.

The peaceful atmosphere makes a dramatic change from the buzzing mood of the city center outside. Gather your thoughts in the tranquil marble courtyard. At night, see the mosque illuminated in white light in the Ankara skyline.

The public may enter the mosque to look around for free. Nearby, choose between fast food, street vendors and classy bistros at the many restaurants, hotels and cafés in the area. The mosque is built next to a shopping mall and parking lot.

Kocatepe Mosque sits in the center of Ankara, just southeast of the city’s famous plaza, Kizilay Square. Several buses stop on the road just outside the mosque. Walk 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) southeast of Kizilay Metro Station, which is the city’s principal transportation hub, to reach the mosque.
