In the shadow of Mount Lassen, this gorgeous meadow provides access to a waterfall and views of the Milky Way and even the aurora borealis.

Kings Creek Meadow is a hub of tranquility through which a meandering stream passes. Framed by woodland, the area features an open green space that is ideal for picnics in the afternoon and star-gazing at night. Stroll beside the creek with your family and enjoy the serenity away from city life.

Lay down a blanket for a picnic or lazy afternoon nap in these scenic surroundings and enjoy the views of imposing Mount Lassen. Listen to the soft sounds of the stream, as it runs past the wildflowers and grasses of the meadow. With luck, you’ll spot a mule deer grazing in the meadow early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Stay and watch the sunset beside Lassen Peak in this gorgeous location. Once the sun disappears, the night sky is taken over by a spectacular display of stars. Lie on a blanket with a friend and decipher the constellations. You can often see the Milky Way and, on rare occasions, the aurora borealis, or northern lights.

Embark on the Kings Creek Falls Trail, which is a 2.3-mile (3.7-kilometer) loop that takes about 2 hours to complete. It passes satin-leaf lupines and fawn lilies, before reaching the fenced overlook of a 30-foot (9-meter) waterfall. The path is likely to be covered by deep snow in winter.

Bring insect repellent to stave off the mosquitoes in spring and summer. To avoid disturbing the wildlife, remain on the outer edges of the meadow. Make sure to leave no traces of litter in this serene haven.

Kings Creek Meadow is in the eastern part of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Drive northeast from Mill Creek for 25 miles (40 kilometers) to get here in roughly 45 minutes. The highway runs beside the meadow. On your drive here, spot Mount Conard, Brokeoff Mountain and Reading Peak. Note that the scenic drive through this part of the park is closed during times of heavy snow, so winter access to the meadow is by snowshoe or skiing.
