Play among the waves in the Indian Ocean, ride waterslides, watch surfers and visit an aquarium at this beach close to Port Elizabeth’s city center.

Spend a day swimming, sunbathing, observing surfers and relaxing in scenic gardens at King’s Beach. Spot interesting marine life and learn about South African culture at the nearby aquarium and museum. King’s Beach stretches between Port Elizabeth’s harbor wall and the beachside suburb of Humewood. This destination perfectly sums up the easygoing and beach-loving characteristics of Port Elizabeth.

The beach is a picturesque 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) curve of soft golden sand. It’s a designated Blue Flag beach, which means that it’s environmentally friendly and has clean, safe water. Lifeguards patrol the beach year-round and there are well-maintained changing facilities. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the gentle waves. Walk to the north end of King’s Beach to reach the surfing and kitesurfing areas.

Stroll along the King’s Beach Promenade to find family-friendly activities, including mini golf and go-karting. Ride the waterslides at Splash Waterworld. Find freshwater pools, ornamental water features, scenic gardens and restaurants at McArthur Baths Pool Complex. On Sundays the promenade hosts the King’s Beach Flea Market. Browse the stalls for arts, crafts, leather goods and locally produced items.

Take a break from the beach and visit Bayworld, an entertaining aquarium, snake park and museum complex. Watch penguin and seal shows, spot sleek sharks and see diverse tropical fish. Learn about venomous snakes and other reptiles, including crocodiles and lizards. See exhibits that celebrate South African natural, cultural, and maritime history. Don’t miss the huge skeleton of a southern right whale and the display of Xhosa handicrafts.

Situated in the suburb of Humewood, King’s Beach is less than a 10-minute drive from Port Elizabeth’s city center. It’s easily accessible via public bus, taxi and rental car. There’s a large parking area at the northern end of the promenade.

The pool complex and waterpark are open from September to April. Bayworld is open daily, except for Christmas Day.
