Highly recommend staying here, really great hotel

Posted 3 Jun 2018 on Hotels
We absolutely loved this hotel. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly lady who checked us in and upgraded us to a valley view room. The room had both a balcony and an awesome view. The hotel was very clean, the staff were fabulous, the bed was really comfy and the breakfast was fantastic. We only stayed one night on the way to the ferry back to the U.K. but we will definitely be back. Short walk to a memorial to French soldiers which was an added bonus for us to be able to pay our respects to the list soldiers who fought and died for us. Highly recommend.

Individual and interesting hotel

Posted 1 Sep 2017
Pros: Wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.
Cons: Dinner options
Location: Situated at the top of Mount Kemmel many WW1 memorials in the area including a monument to French soldiers adjacent to Hotel.
An interesting hostelry situated close to many WW1 landmarks. A lovely breakfast served each morning but Dinner is restrictive serving only a four course option and requiring booking early or the option disappears.

Thank you for your stay in our hotel. We are happy you enjoyed it. Concerning dinners: its only on MOnday and Tuesdays that we only have one menu, alle other days of the week we have several menus to choose from. Till next time! The HMK Team

Good situation. Lovely outlook ...but...

Posted 23 Aug 2017
Pros: Location and outlook. Restaurant.
Cons: Move the bathroom door? Install a decent wardrobe. Maybe let potential guests know the limitations on restaurant service..
Location: Country walks. Exploring the area. Church in Kemmel has a very good Irish exhibition.
Excellent restaurant but accommodation disappointing. Room too small with bathroom crammed into corner. The WC is less than 2m from head of bed through the open door. Ok for one! Rather strangely on Mondays and Tuesdays set menu only no choices but we were lucky we enjoyed both dinners. No lunches whilst we were there. It seems to be the form in the area at this time. Out hotel in Ypres only did basic food - chef and restaurant staff on holiday end of July beginning of August. Must be a strong trade union!

Thank you for having staed in our hotel. We find your review very disappointing: rating our hotel as a 2-star really is ridiculous. Let's drill down into your review. 1) On all websites it is clearly said that our restaurant normally would be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. However, for our honorable hotel guests only we provide one, as you stated enjoyable, menu. We also send an e-mail stating clearly this information. Dinner was made by our regular chef. What has this to do with the trade unions ? We rendered you a perfect dinner and service. 2) The bathroom door can be closed, whats the point you want to make ? 3) You had a completely new and decent wardrobe. What problem can you possibly have had with it ? 4) Room size was 18 m² and is also clearly stated when you book. Why not booking a 30, 40 or even 55 m² room then (which we also have)? Very disappointing review indeed. Next time, we suggest that you inform yourself better (website, facebook, e-mail) and make a better room & restaurant decision.

Little Gem

I had a business meeting in Ypres so choose this hotel based on location. The location is beautiful on top of the Kemmel and the room with the amazing view was equally impressive. I was a bit surprised they didn't have a vegetarian option on the dinner menu but when I told them the chef whipped up an amazing Fresh tomato and mushroom ravioli. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel and hope to go back soon in a leisure scenario

Lovely hotel in very quiet and secluded area

Posted 4 Aug 2015
On a pilgrimage to find the WWI war grave of my great uncle, I discovered this lovely hotel in the most beautiful and quiet location. Staff made me us feel welcome and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Not enough information in english

Posted 24 Jul 2015 on Wotif
Pros: Location was nice and quite
Cons: More food menus in the room and in foyer in English. And supply more tea bags and free water bottles would have been nice
Location: Location very woody and walking the only activity.
Room was very tiny. For two people traveling from abroad with a large cases we only just fit in the room. Cups to small to have a decent cup of tea and bathroom was extra small. Dinner menu was not provided in English and receptionist was not particularly interested. Provided two tea bags and the fridge was ultra small. Location was nice but would suit only back packers with not much luggage or needs.

When you say "Location was nice but would suit only back packers with not much luggage or needs. " you mean: "for that particular SMALL budget room" that you hired. If you really want a luxurous stay, take one of the renovated or entirely new, larger rooms: for instance the VIP rooms or the superiors. We have rooms that have a 5-star rating too... but then you have to pay the price for it, of course. You also complain about the fact that " the fridge is too small". Well, euh, we provide a mini-bar (enitrely free of charge!) to keep some bottles of water, coca-cola, ... cold... not as a fridge to keep all of your larger amounts of food, drinks, etc. that you might take with you fresh. If the need would arise, we put such items, as a service, in our larger, professional fridges. About the cup size: just one call to the reception and you would have obtained whatever you would have asked for. To end with the remark about the English spoken menu: it is not to the people of reception to make translations about speciliased food: we have professional waiters that are more than happy to do translation of the menu for you. We also want to add to this that all of our staff speak English, that all of the information booklets that are in the rooms have been translated in 4 languages (also in English), we provide touristic information in the room in 4 languages (also in English), etcetera. We are thus more than suprised to read "Not enough information in english" as the title of a review. Have a pleasant further stay here in Europe!

A hotel with real character.

Posted 24 Jul 2015 on Hotels
After almost 3 weeks in Europe, this was to be our final hotel. I wanted to be near to my uncles war grave, to visit, and have time to look at a few WW1 sites, and this hotel was in a good location for this. I looked at a number of hotels in the area, but this one looked 'a bit special' from the information, and truly it was. The hotel had real 'character'. The owner was at reception when we arrived, and we soon were settled in enjoying a cup of tea in our room. I read a review which said the hotel was difficult to find, and it probably was without a sat nav, but our sat nav found it without problem. It was an older building, and it didn't have air conditioning or a fan. The weather was warm and humid and leaving the window open allowed a number of midgies in, despite the net curtains. Needing to sleep ON the bed rather than beneath the duvet, I did end up with a few bites. Apart from that, it was a great stay and we would book the hotel again.
