Discover the fresh water lagoon and spot monkeys at the end of this unspoiled beach with swaying coconut trees and soothing waves.

Kalacha Beach, also called Paliem Beach, remains almost as unspoiled today as it was before tourism changed the Goan coast. Only a couple of charming restaurant huts to one side of the shore show the effects of the last few decades. This area is famous for its picturesque fresh water lagoon and relaxed, bohemian vibe. Music sessions often take place around a camp fire, a great place to meet other travellers. This is an untouched haven, away from the hassle of vendors and large tourists groups.

The idyllic beach is surrounded by forests and has some rocky parts. Make your way over to a fresh water lagoon named Vagkolam, or Sweet Water Lake. It is set against a backdrop of mossy, green hills at the end of the beach. Look out for fascinating wildlife, such as exotic birds and monkeys, among the tropical vegetation around the lake.

Take a dip in the warm Arabian Sea and then take a seat under the swaying palm trees to soak up the sun. It’s easy to drift off to sleep, because the sound of the rolling waves has a soothing effect and the beach is usually quiet. At sunset, mingle with the locals and backpackers for a jam session around an open fire.

Grab a bite to eat at one of the small shacks along the beach. Try an Indian fish curry, prepared with the catch of the day and aromatic spices. Barter with local vendors at the few stalls near the beach to purchase some handicrafts, jewellery or hippie-style beachwear. Adventurists can try paragliding or hang gliding from the beach’s northern hilltop by arranging a tour in Arambol village.

Kalacha Beach lies just north from Arambol on Goa’s west coast. The beach is only accessible on foot from the village. From central Goa, take a bus or hire a bike, taxi or scooter to get to Arambol and walk the rest. Kalacha is accessible on foot from Querim Beach, another secluded paradise. Visit the area between October and May if you want to avoid monsoons.
