Make your way through the sculpture-laden pathways of the picturesque gardens and inspect works of art from across the ages.

The Joslyn Art Museum is a cultural hub providing an artistic journey through several eras. It has a range of galleries focusing on medieval, renaissance and baroque art, in addition to impressionist and modernist works. Embark on a guided tour with a museum docent for a comprehensive understanding of the works of art and their context.

Admire the majestic façade of the large museum building, fronted by four imposing columns at the top of a set of outdoor steps. It has an art deco design, while the interior is made up of 38 different types of marble from around the world.

This vast museum covers the artistic traditions from across the globe. Traverse the galleries that display art from the Americas, Europe, Asia and elsewhere. Look through the temporary exhibits, which tend to cover particular artists, themes and time periods.

Among the highlights in the complex is the Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden, which is open year-round. Stroll alongside the Sydney Cate Family Fountain Wall and inspect the intriguing statues. Visit the Discovery Garden for its fascinating pieces of modern art that line the meandering paths.

Browse the items for sale at the Hitchcock Museum Shop, which has gifts, souvenirs and cards on display. Relax with snacks, meals and refreshments at charming the café in the museum’s atrium.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until afternoon. Come after dinner on Thursday when the museum has evening hours. Visit the complex for free. The sculpture garden is open daily until late in the evening.

The Joslyn Art Museum is just south of the Creighton University in the downtown district of Omaha. Walk northwest from the Old Market for about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to get here in 20 minutes. Park for free in the lot northeast of the museum. Explore the area to see such sights as the Omaha Children’s Museum, St. John’s Catholic Church and Turner Park.
