A 420-metre giant in the towering Pudong skyline, the Jin Mao Tower is a feat of modern engineering. It was designed to withstand the extremes of the Chinese weather, with inbuilt shock absorbers to protect against typhoons and earthquakes and every bit of the structure playing its part. Even the spectacular swimming pool on the fifty-seventh floor has a dual role as a damper, helping to reduce any aftershocks.
With a footprint of nearly 2.5 hectares, the building encompasses a grand concert hall, luxurious hotel and numerous plush offices. In the annex building, you’ll find a number of exhibition halls, banqueting chambers and other function rooms.
Entrance to the viewing platform on the 88th floor is free when you buy a Big Bus ticket otherwise expect to pay a small fee when you arrive at the dedicated entrance. High-speed lifts zoom straight up to the deck in under a minute, leaving you to simply step out and admire the jaw-dropping Shanghai scenery. If you time your visit for after-dark, you’ll be rewarded by spectacular sweeping views of the lights which illuminate many of the city’s landmarks.
On your descent, check out the vaulting circular atrium of the 5-star Grand Hyatt Hotel. Music lovers may want to plan their visit around the schedule of the Jin Mao Concert Hall, which attracts some of the world’s finest classical and jazz musicians. There are only 395 seats available, so book in advance to guarantee a seat!
Open every day from first thing in the morning until late, the Jin Mao Tower is best reached by bus or subway, both of which stop at the Lujiazu station. Alternatively, you might want to combine it with a visit to some of the other Pudong attractions, such as the Aquarium and Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
