Enjoy a relaxing break from sightseeing and visit Jelitkowo Beach. This traditional seaside resort sits on the southern shores of the Baltic Sea and overlooks Gdańsk Bay. Jelitkowo Beach has been a popular Gdańsk retreat since its humble beginnings as a fishing hamlet in the late 1800s. Today, it continues to attract visitors with its golden sand, safe waters and beachfront restaurants.
The beach buzzes with life during the summer months and is a great alternative to Gdańsk’s Old Town attractions. Spend a day sunbathing and cooling off in the inviting sea water. Lifeguards patrol the beach in peak season, making it a safe area for children. Play beach volleyball or try water sports such as windsurfing.
When you’re hungry, select from the variety of cafés, restaurants and food stands right on the beach. Purchase drinks, ice creams and snacks or dine on fresh seafood dishes.
Come in winter to discover a nearly empty beach and the opportunity to appreciate the scenery almost unaccompanied. Snowfall is common in winter and turns the beach into a fairytale-like landscape.
While here, be sure to explore the parks of Jelitkowo village. Jelitkowo Park has direct access to the beach and features some old fishermen’s dwellings. The park’s shaded lawns provide welcome relief in the warm summer months. Nearby, President Ronald Reagan Park is crisscrossed by paved trails and spills out onto the coastline. Pose with the statues of the president and Polish-born Pope John Paul II.
Whenever you visit Jelitkowo Beach you can enjoy relaxed walks to nearby villages. Choose between walking along the beach itself or a tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route. A 40-minute walk to the north is Sopot Pier. Boats depart from here for the Hel Peninsula. About a 30-minute stroll south will bring you to Brzeźno Pier, which offers views back toward Gdańsk’s city center.
Jelitkowo Beach is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north of Gdańsk’s city center and well connected by public buses and trams. If you’re feeling energetic, rent a bike and get here via the coastal bike path, which starts in the Brzeźno neighborhood.
