Seogwipo’s Teddy Bear Museum houses an extraordinary collection of toy bears of all shapes and sizes, from soft and cuddly childhood favourites to historic artefacts, lifelike replicas to kitsch novelties.
The museum opened in 2001 and chronicles the changing face of the humble teddy bear through over a century of development. In the History Hall you can see some of the earliest toy bears from the world-famous German company Steiff, including many rare and valuable models. As well as tracing the history of bear manufacturing itself, the History Hall chronicles milestones in human history, with toy bears re-enacting the moon landings and the Normandy landings of the Second World War and depicting a range of iconic celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Gandhi and the Beatles. Don’t miss the battery-operated Elvis bears that perform songs by the King at regular intervals throughout the day!
Highlights of the Art Hall include two of the most expensive bears in the world, the LV Bear and the Diamond Bear, alongside ursine recreations of famous artworks including the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s The Creation and Rodin’s The Thinker.
Outside in the garden you will come face to face with lifesize replicas of real bears, including the indigenous Korean black bear. Wander around the grounds to discover all the bear figures and take photographs of your family and friends beside the impressive creatures. The pond and fountain also follow the bear theme, so don’t hurry past without taking a good look. Complete your visit with a snack or light meal in the museum café or a drink in the licensed bar.
The Teddy Bear Museum is in Seogwipo, conveniently situated close to the tourist sights of Cheonjiyeon Falls and Yeomiji Botanical Garden and an easy drive from the airport. Allow between one and two hours for a thorough tour of the collection.
