Delve into these mysterious caves to inspect bizarre animals and spectacular living rock formations illuminated in bright and colorful neon lights.

The Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave is a large network of tunnels adorned with impressive stalactites. Fluorescent lights illuminate the geological formations, such as corals and fossils that originated from an underwater reef. Delve into the lamp-lit caves with a guide to learn about the curious natural phenomena that exist here.

Use the caves as a cool, shady retreat from the heat of the afternoon. Listen to the soothing music and enjoy the colorful light displays. Bring your kids on these underground trails, which are fairly flat and easy to maneuver. The site has displays containing the bizarre animals that live in these caves.

Be careful not to slip on the wet steps as you continue through the many spacious rooms of the cave system. Note that the cave is alive, meaning its stalagmites and stalactites continue to grow due to ongoing water flow. The railed path that meanders through the caves is 2,165 feet (660 meters) long, although the total length of the caves is 10,500 feet (3,200 meters).

Consider the intriguing shapes of the various stalactite formations and imagine the familiar items they resemble. Admire the many intricate patterns carved in the limestone rock face.

Browse the eclectic items available in the souvenir shop beside the exit. Dine in the adjacent restaurant to regain your strength after the trip through the tunnels.

There is a fee for each person to access the caves. Discounts are available for kids and groups. The site opens daily from morning until early evening.

Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave is in the southwestern section of the island, at the southern end of the Banna Park Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive from the Ishigaki Airport. Walk here from the downtown area of Ishigaki City in about 40 minutes. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Ishigaki Dam, the Jido Park and the Maesato Golf Course.
