Be amazed by the panoramic views from Inspiration Point. From the paved walkways, observe the far-reaching vistas across Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island, Vikingsholm Castle and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Excellent facilities combined with plenty of nearby trails make the viewpoint even more enjoyable for visitors.
Overlooking the great sheltered cove of Emerald Bay, with its towering pine trees and gently lapping waters, Inspiration Point is a must spot to visit on any trip to the region. Stand at 600 feet (180 meters) above the biggest alpine lake in North America and appreciate the serenity of the views. Take photos to capture the magnificence and grandeur of the landscape.
Appreciate many different views as you wander along the paved paths that weave around the point. See Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe. Use one of the binocular stations to spot a small stone building poking atop the island. This teahouse was used by Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight, who also owned the famous Vikingsholm mansion.
Mrs. Knight had Vikingsholm built for her as a summer home in 1929. Look to the western shore of Emerald Bay and admire the grand 38-room mansion, which is considered one of the best examples of Scandinavian architecture in the country. Find the trailhead to Vikingsholm Castle just 1 mile (2 kilometers) from Inspiration Point.
Hiking trails abound in the area. Spend a delightful few hours trekking along nearby routes such as Cascade Falls Hiking Trail or Bayview Hiking Trail, which begin from just across the street from Inspiration Point’s parking lot.
Find Inspiration Point on Emerald Bay Road about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Tahoe City. This road is often closed during the winter when driving conditions are treacherous. The area has a parking lot, but in peak summer months it can fill up quickly. Arrive early to secure a space. Restrooms are provided and many of the views can be accessed by wheelchair.
