Iho Beach (also Iho Tewoo Beach) is the perfect complement to a day of sightseeing in Jeju City. An arching bay of clean sand replaces a maze of compact streets, and the noise of traffic makes way for the soothing sound of rippling waves. Spend a day swimming, fishing, watching planes come in to land and visiting the unique horse lighthouses of Jeju Island.
Summertime, when the sun shines bright and the water is mild, is a great time for swimming at the beach. Have fun jumping in the waves and lay back on inflatable rings, which are available to rent. Stroll along the breakwaters, where fishermen cast lines and wait patiently in the hope of catching sea smelts. Fishing trips depart from the small marina and sashimi restaurants are plentiful.
Walk to the northern end of the bay and then along a pier to see two large and functional horse-shaped lighthouses. These twin structures, one red and one white, represent a horse breed native to Jeju. Take some photos and admire the views back toward the beach.
Another entertaining activity to do here is to sit and watch planes make their ascents and descents to and from Jeju International Airport. Listen as the roar of the engines momentarily interrupts the peaceful coastal ambiance. Alternatively, wander amid the trees of the small forest that lines the bay. There are campsites here, if you want to bring a tent and spend the night a few steps from the sea.
Iho Beach is about a 40-minute bus journey from the center of Jeju City. Parking is available and there’s facilities such as changing rooms, toilets and showers. Find cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and accommodation options located on the beach road. Dodubong Peak, a small parasitic volcano, is a short drive along the coast.
