This stunning theater, with its glistening white architecture and curved lines, makes it easy to forget that you are in Ho Chi Minh City and not in Paris.

Whether you are a cultural enthusiast or simply appreciate beautiful architecture, the Saigon Opera House is a sight not to be missed. Also known as The Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, this gleaming white landmark is a visual reminder that Saigon was the capital of French Indochina at the turn of the 20th century.

Observe the building’s majestic design, influenced by French colonialism. Its roof and all of its ornamental pieces were flown in from Paris and all of its décor and furnishings were designed by a French artist.

After World War I, criticisms of the theater’s French appearance impelled the city to remove the decorations, statues and engravings that adorned the outside of the opera house. To celebrate Ho Chi Minh City’s 300th birthday in 1998, the Saigon Opera House was restored to its original splendor.  Admire the white statues at the entrance, colorful tiled floors and opulent chandeliers.

Besides opera, Saigon Opera House hosts a variety of shows, from ballets to plays to traditional Vietnamese dance. Find a performance to pique your interest and enjoy a few hours of entertainment in this beautiful venue. Enjoy the view from your seat in the grand, which can fit 1800 patrons.

The Saigon Opera House is located in the heart of the bustling District 1 area. It is only open to the public during events. Purchase tickets at the box office or at the venue itself.

Other relics of French Colonial rule, such as Saigon Notre Dame Basilica and Reunification Palace, are within easy walking distance. Looking out at the wide tree-lined boulevard that surrounds Saigon Opera House, you may need to remind yourself that you are in Vietnam and not France.
