Go fishing, hiking, biking or cross-country skiing at this coastal nature reserve and stay overnight at the park’s scenic waterfront campgrounds.

Crashing ocean waves, grassy dunes and a sandy beach create wondrous scenery in Hither Hills State Park. Stretching across the narrow finger of land that beckons from Block Island Sound, the park features both bayside and ocean-fronting coastlines. Tackle the park’s hiking and biking trails in the warmer months or clip on your cross-country skis in winter.

Year-round fishing gives the park plenty of appeal to keen anglers. Select from a series of popular spots for sport fishing stretching along this coastline. Get a license to hunt small game, waterfowl and deer during appropriate seasons.

Find beachside adventure at the park. The broad sandy beach looks out across the Atlantic Ocean on the park’s southern side. Dive into the waves or try surfing, stand-up paddleboarding or windsurfing. Play ball on the park’s playing fields or take the kids to explore the playground. Bring food and drinks for lunch at one of the park’s enchanting picnic spots or purchase snacks from the general store or concession stand.

Hither Hills State Park has a comprehensive network of hiking and biking trails. Explore the pretty bridle paths and enjoy the sweeping coastal panorama. Check out the Walking Dunes of Napeague Harbor on the park’s western side. This area has a series of walking trails traversing the shifting sand hills. You’ll also find a section of woodlands dotted with oak, shad, pine and Russian olive trees. In winter, these paths become a network of cross-country skiing trails.

Pitch a tent at the popular oceanfront campgrounds and experience having the sounds of crashing Atlantic Ocean waves lull you to sleep in the evening. Sites have plenty of space for campers and trailers.

Hither Hills State Park covers a broad section of the South Fork of Long Island. Use the nature reserve’s wide-open spaces and bring supplies for a full day of adventure. Alternatively, book a campsite and stay overnight. Check the relevant permits before setting up your camping or fishing gear. The park is just a 5-minute drive west of Montauk.
