Visit this historic stone-walled winery on Mount Veeder to find out about a Swiss entrepreneur’s take on the age-old pairing of wine and art.

The Hess Collection is an acclaimed winery that combines culinary and cultural programs with its extensive holding of Napa Valley wines. Taste some of the Hess Collection’s prizewinning wines and learn about the philosophy of its founder, Donald Hess. Explore the winery’s extensive art museum and peruse Hess’ private collection of contemporary art.

Drop in at the Hess Collection’s Visitor Center and learn about the estate’s history. First established in 1903 by Colonel Theodore Gier, the winery remained out of public view until 1989. At this point, Donald Hess opened the doors to his remarkable winery, which featured wines from his vineyards across Mount Veeder and Napa Valley. The Swiss winemaker is known for his philosophy: “Nurture the land return what you take.” Find out about the winery’s commitment to sustainability as you join a range of visitor programs and experiences.

Check out the tasting bar to sample the Hess Collection’s current release. The Mount Veeder cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay are popular Hess varieties. There is also a selection of single-vineyard designations from the Hess Collection’s small-scale estate vineyards throughout the Napa Valley.

Be sure to save some time to visit the Art Museum. This free museum showcases some of Donald Hess’ collection of contemporary artworks, which is focused primarily on 20 living artists that are supported throughout several stages in their careers. Reserve your place in the Museum Walk to enjoy a docent-led tour of the collection, followed by complimentary samples of Hess wines.

Get the full experience of the Hess Collection when you book a combined tour and luncheon. You’ll be guided through the visitor center and museum before indulging in a three-course luncheon that features regional ingredients and paired Hess wines in a private dining room.

The Hess Collection is less than a 20-minute drive northeast from Napa. The visitor center, wine-tasting bar and art museum are open daily. The art museum is free to visit. Book ahead to ensure your table at the wine-tasting bar or your place on the tour.
