Helsingborg
Climb a medieval tower, stroll through exquisite gardens and wet your feet at tropically themed beaches at this ancient city by the sea.

Helsingborg is one of Sweden's oldest cities, with a history that extends back almost 1,000 years. Explore the seaside locale's medieval architecture and historical homes, enjoy coastal walks and relax on a beach.

Begin your adventure at the waterfront, home to some of the city’s oldest buildings. Admire the brickwork and bejeweled altars of the 14th-century Church of Saint Mary's, Helsingborg's oldest church. Nearby is Helsingborg's City Hall, a 19th-century turreted landmark known locally as the Rådhuset.

For sweeping views of the harbor, climb to the observation deck of Kärnan Tower. The 115-foot (35-meter) structure was once part of a medieval castle. Tour the 19th-century Sofiero Castle and its extensive flower-filled garden. Then go to Fredriksdal Museum and Garden, an open-air museum with historical buildings, including an 18th-century mansion. There are also several gardens and a working farm where you will see horses, sheep and geese among other animals.

There are more creatures on display at Tropikariet, an exotic zoo. Other Helsingborg attractions that children in particular will love is the Pirate Playground.

In summer, relax on the beaches of Helsingborg's waterfront. They extend for approximately 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) along the city’s coastline. Take a dip in the fresh waters of Fria Bad and enjoy a nap on the sands of Tropical Beach, which is decorated with swaying palms. During frosty Scandinavian winters, head to a public bath to enjoy heated pools and invigorating saunas.

If shopping is your thing, visit the Kullagatan, a long pedestrianized street featuring big chain stores and Swedish design shops.

At night, the city has lots to keep you entertained. Watch plays and live music at Dunkers Kulturhus. The cultural center also features art exhibitions and creative workshops. You can also see dance, drama and orchestral performances at the City Hall. Elsewhere, enjoy the bars, late night clubs and standup comedy halls.

Get to Helsingborg by car, bus or train from Copenhagen and many other Danish cities. Let the seaside destination mesmerize you with its history, architecture and beaches.
