If you love the sea with its waves and sounds, you will appreciate a trip to Hanstholm, where the sea is central to most activities. It also creates a living for many of the people in the town and, at the same time, it provides the opportunity for water sports. The sea has also contributed to giving the area a strategic importance, historically speaking.
Hanstholm is the most north-western point in Denmark and one of the most important fishing communities in Northern Europe. Visit the large fishing harbour, where you can see the work first-hand, and also taste the selection of seafood and bring some home if you like. As Hanstholm is located on a lime cliff, you have to walk down the cliff to the harbour and this is an experience in itself. In the harbour you can experience the Hanstholm Fish Auction, which is Denmark's biggest, with buyers from all over Europe.
From Hanstholm Lighthouse you can see the town and the sea from another angle. Located 65 metres above the sea, you will have a fantastic view of the area and a great opportunity to view the beautiful scenery. The area surrounding Hanstholm played an important role during the Second World War, as the location made it possible to patrol the entrance to Skagerrak and Kattegat. You can therefore find many remains of German bunkers and installations on the beach and the sand hills.
10 kilometres south of Hanstholm is Klitmøller, which is a mixture of a small fishing village, a surfing hotspot and a holiday location. Regardless of whether you are on an extended holiday or just a weekend break in Hanstholm, you must not miss this little gem, as the town has a very special atmosphere. Klitmøller is one of the best locations in the world for windsurfing and you can try it yourself all year round.
The climate in the North Sea can generally be a bit severe and Hanstholm is no exception, so bring sensible clothes. There is something for everyone here all year round and the location can make the weather alone an experience.
Give yourself the opportunity to experience a small town and a special part of Denmark that is important for all of Europe. Enjoy the magnificent scenery that gets under your skin.
