Hamilton Park

Hamilton Park showing a garden

Picnic and relax in this attractive park, which is surrounded by tree-lined residential streets and well-preserved 19th-century brownstones.

Hamilton Park is one of Jersey City’s most beloved parks. It’s not just Jersey City residents who will find themselves falling for the charms of this green space. Stroll around the amenity-packed park and explore the leafy surrounding streets to discover historic houses and shop fronts, boutiques and restaurants.

The district of Hamilton Park emerged in the latter half of the 19th century as wealthy homeowners began to build Victorian-style residences in this part of town. Wander around the streets surrounding the park to see well-preserved examples of these Victorian abodes.

In this neighborhood, life revolves around the central 5.4-acre (2.1-hectare) Hamilton Park, which takes its name from Founding Father and U.S. statesman, Alexander Hamilton. Explore the square-shaped park and take advantage of its many facilities. Relax in the large gazebo, shoot hoops in the basketball court, practice your serve on the tennis court or simply sit and chat on the grass.

Also within the park’s boundaries are a children’s playground, a dog run and several water features. As you explore, note the pretty Victorian-style lampposts and benches dotted around the area. These were added to the park during a restoration project completed in 2010.

From May until October, a farmers market is hosted in the park on Wednesday afternoons. Browse the stalls selling fresh produce grown on nearby farms as well as baked treats and ready-to-eat goods. Come in summer to see an open-air play performance in Hamilton Park as part of the Shakespeare in the Parkfestival, run by a Jersey City-based theater company. Open-air movie screenings also take place in the park on select summer nights.

Find Hamilton Park in the northern section of Jersey City, New Jersey. To reach Hamilton Park, ride the PATH train to Grove Street and Newport and walk from there. The Newport and Harsimus Cove Hudson-Bergen Light Rail stops are within easy walking distance. Local bus routes also run to the neighborhood. The park is open daily and is free to enter.
