Admire the impressive frescoes decorating the interior of this 17th-century church and explore the important square that surrounds it.

See the beautiful architecture of the Győr Benedictine Church, the first church built by Győr’s Jesuit Christians settlers. After visiting the church, explore the surrounding Széchenyi tér, Győr's main square since the 14th century. Check out some of the other attractions lining the square, including the Old Town Hall and the Győr Basilica.

Built in the 17th century, the Győr Benedictine Church is also known as the Church of St. Ignatius. Note the architectural style of the church, which was modelled after the Church of the Gesù in Rome. Its two distinctive towers were added in the 18th century.

Look up at the ceiling, which depicts the ascension of St. Ignatius. These frescos, along with the main altarpiece and nave, were painted by prominent Baroque artist Paul Troger.

Step out into Széchenyi Square, one of the town’s main gathering places. Wander around this former medieval marketplace and marvel at the number of charming historic buildings that surround you. Visit Gyor’s Old Town Hall, which was built at the turn of the 19th century in a neo-Baroque style. Admire its elegant bay window as well as the elaborate coat of arms found above the entranceway. Head inside to see where the city archives are kept.

Walk along the cobbled streets of Chapter Hill to reach the town’s imposing basilica. Built over centuries of Hungary’s turbulent history, the basilica’s architecture a is patchwork of different styles. Explore its gorgeous Baroque interior, which features stunning frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch and his students. See religious treasures such as the Herm of László, a gold bust and reliquary of one of Hungary’s earliest king-saints, dating back to the early 15th century.

Find the church, basilica and town hall in Széchenyi Square, known locally as Széchenyi tér. Visiting hours and admission fees to the square’s attractions are not clearly advertised, so it’s best to ask locally for more information when planning your visit.

No visit to Győr is complete without a stop at this attractive church and the historic surrounding square.
