This stately town hall is symbolic of the city’s remarkable growth and features beautiful late 19th-century architecture, an ornate façade and an intriguing history.

The history of Grazer Rathaus (Graz City Hall) illustrates how the second-largest city in Austria has flourished over the centuries. After outgrowing two earlier city halls, Graz’s city administration built this stunning Late Historicist-Old German style hall in 1893. Visit Grazer Rathaus to discover this elegant civic monument and its stately architecture and interiors.

Approach Grazer Rathaus via the picturesque Hauptplatz. The four-level building sits grandly at the southern border of the square. It was designed by Viennese architects Wielemans and Reuter and construction was financed with funds acquired through a wine tax. Admire the building’s Late Historicist architecture, featuring small corner towers and a larger central tower, topped with a spired dome. Spot the niche statues depicting notable Austrian figures in the ornately decorated neoclassical façade. Find statues representing the Habsburg emperors, as well as four sculptures dedicated to art, science, commerce and industry.

Enter the city hall to see a selection of artworks. To the main entrance’s left side, find a 1971 painting depicting Grazer Rathaus over time. The original coffered ceiling, gallery, chandelier and wall clock have all been preserved in the two-level session hall. Climb the stairs to the first floor to find the Trauungssaal (Wedding Hall).

Visit the hall’s inner courtyard to discover an interesting quirk in the design of the Grazer Rathaus. When the current building was being planned, all the house owners on the street were requested to give up their properties to make way for the expansion. Two resolutely refused and their houses can still be seen extending into the hall’s inner design. Locals say that this tenacity is an enduring characteristic of the proud Styrian people.

Grazer Rathaus is located in the city’s historic Old Town. Several other historic buildings are located nearby, including Graz Cathedral. The building can easily be reached with the city’s tram system or on foot. Grazer Rathaus is open daily and entry is free.
