Walk along the majestic colonnades of historic structures surrounding a market square. Its secret tunnels were used in World War I.

The Grand’ Place is the central hub of the city of Arras, where Baroque Flemish buildings loom impressively over restaurant tables and street performers. It initially grew from Arras’ markets in the center of the 11th-century town. Watch the people pass by from your seat at a café in this atmospheric square.

After you visit the many boutiques that line the square, continue down the charming alleys. Many stores are hidden beneath the arcade, which is also an ideal spot during rain showers.

Make your way to the adjacent Place des Héros, the other main square of Arras. Here, visit some of the many bars and restaurants. Underground passages between the two plazas date back to World War I. Explore the intricate network of tunnels and learn about the city’s role in the war.

In sunny weather, relax at the outdoor tables of the stylish restaurants and cafés. Capture photos of the Flemish buildings, including the Town Hall and clock tower, which stand tall over the plazas. Climb up the clock tower to enjoy panoramic views of the square.

Visit the plazas on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when a large market featuring clothes, fresh produce and random items fills much of the available space. Amble along the side streets, where the stalls overflow with goods. The Christmas market in November and December is impressive with its wooden huts and hot wine. Dine on oysters and champagne to celebrate the festivities. Take the kids on the merry-go-round and ice rink.

Many of the buildings in the Grand’ Place were destroyed during World War I and have been faithfully reconstructed to their original splendor. The Grand’ Place is just northeast of the Place des Héros in the center of Arras. Reach the plaza easily on foot or by bus. If you drive, use its underground parking lot.
