The largest of the three Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman offers visitors beautiful beaches, unique wildlife experiences, exciting nightlife and a wide range of shopping opportunities.
Visitors from all over the world visit Grand Cayman for the opportunity to interact with stingrays in the wild, so a trip to Stingray City is a must. Stingray City is a series of shallow sandbars at the north end of the island where stingrays come to be fed by hand. Rent snorkeling or scuba diving gear from one of the many rental companies and feed the stingrays yourself, or just watch the action from a glass-bottom boat.
Three miles (4.8 kilometers) north of Stingray City is Seven Mile Beach, which is often described as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Walk across its coral sands or take a dip into the crystal-clear waters with several small reefs offering outstanding snorkeling opportunities. Relax at tranquil Rum Point. It’s a quieter spot with many free hammocks available for basking in the sun and enjoying panoramic views.
For a change of pace from the beach, head to the nation’s capital, George Town. Here, many of the most popular sights in the area are within walking distance of each other. The George Town waterfront has the oldest building in the islands. This building houses the Cayman Islands National Museum. Learn about the country’s cultural heritage and view exhibits such as the display featuring migratory birds and the rich bird life that exists here year-round.
Shop for souvenirs at one of several shops around the harbor or pick up a piece of jewelry featuring the islands’ own semi-precious stone, caymanite. Walk down Cardinal Avenue, the city’s main shopping street and browse a range of high-end stores, including fashion boutiques.
While there is a small walkable area around the George Town harbor, much of the island is best explored by vehicle. Car rentals and taxis are readily available.
