After standing for nearly a thousand years, this incredible building remains a spectacular piece of architecture both inside and out.

A trip to the Kaiserpfalz Goslar, or Goslar Imperial Palace, is an essential part of any vacation in Goslar. Wander the halls of this exceptional building, which is close to a thousand years old, and you will feel as if you have traveled back in time. Along with the rest of incredibly scenic Goslar, the palace is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

The construction of the palace took around a decade, beginning in 1040, during the Holy Roman Empire. The palace went on to be one of the preferred residences of the emperors for many years to come. It was not just a home, however. Court councils and imperial assemblies were also held here. Enter the vast imperial hall, which measures around 8,610 square feet (roughly 800 square meters) and you will begin to get a sense of how politically important this place has been. See the elaborate scenes painted on the walls, telling the story of the Holy Roman Empire. This palace was at the heart of this immensely powerful empire.

Make sure you also visit the Pfalzkapelle St. Ulrich, or Castle Chapel of St. Ulrich. This beautiful medieval building is where the heart of Heinrich III was buried, hidden underneath a memorial that is still in place today. Other fascinating sights to look for around the complex include the imperial throne, made of bronze, and a wonderful carved griffin.

Find Goslar Imperial Palace located in spacious green grounds just a few minutes’ walk to the south of the town center. Choose to come on a sunny day if possible, so you can make the most of the gorgeous outdoor space around the building. The palace is open daily, with slightly reduced hours between November and March. Be aware that there is an admission fee, although there are discounts for children and groups. Most importantly of all, don’t forget to bring your camera, as you will want to take lots of photos of this impressive and historic building.
