A sparkle in Innsbruck’s eye which shelters stories from the city’s past.

At the very heart of Innsbruck’s Old Town quarter, right in the central square itself, the Golden Roof or Goldenes Dachl has strong claims to being the city’s centrepiece. The glimmering gold tiles are framed by the brilliant white of the traditional Tyrolean buildings in the square and set against a backdrop of Alpine mountaintops, providing a picture postcard image for visitors’ photo-albums. Inside the building you’ll find a museum where you can learn about local history.

The Golden Roof commemorates Maximilian I’s second marriage and was built in 1500. These were reportedly hard times and the 2657 copper tiles were plated in gold to create a false image of prosperity.

The reliefs below the roof offer an interesting insight into the state of political affairs at the time. Emperor Maximilian I is clearly depicted between his two wives in an effort to maintain healthy relationships with old alliances made through his first wife in what bore all the hallmarks of an awkward state of affairs.

The Golden Roof Museum is divided into six areas which showcase aspects of local history. There is an engaging interactive display on life at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Audioguides are included in the price of the entrance ticket, and are well worth using for those who are interested in learning more about the building and about Innsbruck. The children’s area has interactive stations on the subject of ancient life. While you’re in the museum, you should also take a moment to enjoy the great views across the square.

The museum is open every day except Monday, and there is a small admission charge. It’s very easy to get to from any of Innsbruck’s central hotels or sights. Otherwise you can take a bus to Museumstrasse and walk the short distance from there.
