Giant Forest Museum

Learn all about the massive, cloud-skimming tree species that populate the nearby Giant Forest at this small but fascinating museum.

The Giant Forest Museum is devoted to the giant sequoia, a huge tree species that grows in the nearby Giant Forest. Explore the exhibits inside the museum for a fascinating introduction to the colossal tree species before venturing off along nearby nature trails to see giant sequoias up close.

Giant sequoias grow naturally only in California and require a very specific climate to thrive. Typically, they occur at higher elevations and are most easily identified by their impressive size. Some grow as tall as 300 feet (90 meters), while their trunks can be as big as 100 feet (30 meters) around at the base.

Browse the displays inside the museum to find out more about the species. See how the trees compare in size to elephants, the Statue of Liberty and the Titanic. Learn how giant sequoias resist fire yet depend on heat to rejuvenate. Some of the exhibits are interactive have the kids take on the role of a sequoia seed and spin the giant wheel to discover their chances of survival.

The museum also features an on-site bookshop. Buy educational materials about the giant trees and the environment in which they thrive. The museum also has restroom facilities.

To see the actual towering trees, set off down one of the many self-guided trails in the area. The walking paths, many of which are equipped with boardwalks, bridges and fencing, allow visitors to view the majestic trees clearly without compromising the surrounding soil and landscape, which the giant sequoias need to survive. If you have any questions about the hiking routes or the giant sequoias, ask a ranger at the museum before venturing outside to explore.

Find the Giant Forest Museum inside the Giant Forest market building, a historic structure that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During summer, shuttle buses stop at the museum. While you’re here, visit other interesting sites in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park.
