Look over Gdańsk’s rooftops from the tower of this magnificent 14th-century landmark, which is also the main branch of the Gdańsk History Museum.

Take a step back in time and discover the ancient history of Gdańsk at the Gdańsk Main Town Hall (Ratusz Glównego Miasta Gdańska). Once the seat of the city’s council, today this monumental building is home to the Gdańsk History Museum (Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Gdańska). Browse the striking interior rooms, which host exhibits dedicated to art, period furniture and the city’s trading heritage. Enjoy unrivaled views of the Old Town from the building’s tower.

The Gdańsk Main Town Hall is thought to date back to the 1300s, originally built as a Gothic-style palace. It has witnessed several design changes since then. Renaissance features were added following a fire in 1556. Reconstruction work took place after World War II bomb damage. In 1970 it became the site of the Gdańsk History Museum. Gaze up at the soaring tower, crowned by a statue of King Sigismund II Augustus.

A major highlight is the building’s stunning interior, most notably the authentic Dutch Mannerist-style Great Council Hall (or Red Chamber). Here, councilors met to create the city’s codes of conduct. Marvel at the decorative ceiling, adorned with 25 frescoes surrounding Isaac van den Blocke’s The Glorification of the Unity of Gdańsk with Poland. Stroll through lavish halls and spot work by European masters including Hans Vredeman de Vries.

On the upper floor, find a series of museum exhibits. Learn about past glories and struggles of Gdańsk and its people, including the city’s destruction by the Red Army.

Be sure to climb to the viewing gallery at the summit of the town hall’s tower, which offers panoramic views of the Old Town and Motława River. Spot significant city landmarks, including Artus Court and Gdańsk Crane. A 37-bell carillon tops the tower.

The town hall stands in the center of the Old Town. It is part of the old Royal Route and a short walk from the ceremonial portals, Green Gate and Golden Gate.

Gdańsk Main Town Hall and its museum are open from Tuesday to Sunday and there is an admission fee. Admission is free on Tuesday. Rent an audio guide for an extra cost.
