Fryeburg has a prime location on the Saco River. The scenic river snakes for 136 miles (219 kilometers) between New Hampshire and Maine. Explore the river by canoe or kayak. If you don’t have your own gear, rent equipment in town. Go fishing for trout, bass and perch.
Swim at Weston's Beach. The expansive sandy beach stretches along the shore of the Saco River. Walk along the river for bird watching or set out your towel and picnic basket to soak up the sun.
Visit in October to attend the Fryeburg Fair. Since its inception in 1851, the event has grown into the largest agricultural fair in Maine. See livestock shows, musical acts, harness racing, forestry demonstrations and more exciting events. Go on amusement rides or enjoy delicious fair food. The fair is held annually over an 8-day period.
Explore the industries of early New England at the Farm Museum, located on the fairgrounds. Walk through the 19th-century barn and schoolhouse and learn about blacksmithing, lumbering, beekeeping and more. See live crafting demonstrations.
Become acquainted with a local celebrity in the Fryeburg Public Library. Early in the 20th century, Fryeburg resident Clarence E. Mulford created Hopalong Cassidy, a heroic cowboy who fought villains and upheld justice. Inside the converted stone schoolhouse, check out the room dedicated to the author and his protagonist.
Fryeburg has a charming downtown area and its magnificent outdoors is refreshingly inviting. Visit the town’s 12 public parks or stroll along the Saco River. Go on a bike tour beginning on Main Street and looping through many of the parks.
