Walk high above the Paraná River across a bridge connecting Foz do Iguaçu with the busy shopping districts of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay.

The Friendship Bridge crosses the Paraná River and connects the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu with the second-largest city in Paraguay, Ciudad del Este. Walk across the bridge to enjoy uninterrupted views along the river and to explore the bustling shopping districts of Ciudad del Este. The 1,812-foot-long (552-meter) bridge opened in 1965 and provides an important trade and economic link between Brazil and Paraguay.

The walk across the bridge can be both chaotic and picturesque. As you join hundreds of pedestrians, buses, cars and motorcycles, you’ll get a feel for the importance of the bridge in the daily lives of the cities it connects.

Pause to take in the views along the Paraná River, dotted with small islands and lined by banks of green forests. Look down at the peacefully flowing river, 256 feet (78 meters) below. Photography enthusiasts will enjoy taking pictures of the contrasting river and city landscapes.

As you near the Paraguayan side of the bridge you’ll notice the industrial skyline of Ciudad del Este looming in the distance. This bustling city is famous for tax-free shopping. It is worth spending a few hours exploring its maze of stores and shopping malls. Stroll along Avenida San Blas and Camilo Recalde, where it’s possible to buy discounted clothing, electronic goods and perfume, among numerous other items. The quality of goods varies and counterfeit products are common, so be careful if you decide to purchase anything. Bargaining is accepted in many stores.

The Friendship Bridge is a 10-minute drive from the center of Foz do Iguaçu and easily accessible via public buses. Allow about 30 minutes to cross on foot. If you don’t want to walk across the bridge, take a public bus or taxi from the immigration office at the start of the bridge. Remember to bring your passport and check for visa requirements and current safety warnings before traveling.
