In 1971 Norma Friedrich Ward gifted 73 hectares of land to the city of San Antonio with the intention of protecting the natural vegetation as well as creating a haven to escape city life.
Decades later and the park has expanded to 97 hectares and has successfully fulfilled all of Mrs Ward's requests. As well as being a natural sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, Friedrich Wilderness Park also is a home for protected animal and plant life. Rolling hills, lush forests and deep canyons add to the magnificent scenery, making it a popular destination.
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not take a hike on one of the four trails available in the park? They vary in degree of difficulty, with one being the easiest and suitable for prams and wheelchairs, while four is a challenging climb. However the general finish time is approximately an hour. Once you get to the top, your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views of the San Antonio skyline.
Friedrich Wilderness Park is internationally known for bird watching and is the home of two endangered species called the black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler. It's not just feathered friends that nest here, if you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of the white-tail deer, raccoons and roadrunners.
If you would like to avail of an educational hike with a guide, contact the San Antonio Parks and Recreation website where you will be able to make a reservation.
There are no cafés or food stalls in the park so do pack a picnic or bring plenty of snacks and beverages. In keeping with the theme of a tranquil hideaway from urban life, bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller-blades, smoking, camping and pets are strictly forbidden.
