Choose an event from the wide selection of performing arts at this intimate theater in Belo Horizonte’s picturesque Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park.

Spend an evening experiencing Brazilian and world culture at Belo Horizonte’s Francisco Nunes Theater. The venue hosts a rotating selection of modern and traditional dance, music and theater performances. It regularly welcomes troupes and performers from the local Belo Horizonte and wider Brazil scenes, as well as from elsewhere in South America and the world.

When the Francisco Nunes Theater first opened its doors in 1950, it was the city’s only theater. Its popularity among culture-hungry audiences has only increased over the decades. The theater was given its name to honor the local musician and composer Francisco Nunes, who died in 1934. See how his legacy still lives on today in this beautiful mid-century modern building.

The theater has undergone major renovations on multiple occasions, but its characterful façade and wavy canopy have always been carefully preserved. Before you enter the building, view the animal mosaics on the side of the structure. The interior spaces have been thoroughly redesigned, though they still retain their unusual curved ceilings. Appreciate the excellent acoustics as you sit in theater surroundings themed with rich red and gold.

Throughout the year, the modernized main auditorium hosts a variety of major events, such as the International Theater Festival, the International Dance Forum, the Black Art Festival, Contemporary Art Summer and many others. There is also an impressive selection of smaller regular events. Come in the daytime to take advantage of the lively program of theater and music events tailored specifically to delight children.

The Francisco Nunes Theater is located in Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park, which is itself a very pleasant destination for a daytrip. Drop off your guests and find parking several blocks away. Try to arrive here an hour or two before the start of the show you’re planning to see so you can enjoy a picnic and walk around the peaceful complex. The Palácio das Artes museum is also just minutes away. This is another excellent place to familiarize yourself with Belo Horizonte’s cultural scene.
