You can start your visit at the San Pedro Church, which is said to have been a major mosque during the time of Muslim occupation. The temple was home to several relics that, unfortunately, were either stolen or destroyed during the Civil War. Its interior, though, is still very attractive thanks to its blue ceiling, reminiscent of the sky.
The Governor's Palace, on the other hand, is an old three-storey house, with each floor spanning some 400 square metres (4,300 square feet). Originally an Arab mansion, it changed hands to become a royal palace, hence the current name. It was here that the great Diego de Velázquez painted King Philip IV in 1644. Nowadays, the building is a cultural centre for the town.
In Villa Fortunatus you’ll find a Roman villa on the banks of the River Cinca. It’s a perfect example of the rural Roman architecture of Aragon, whose origins experts place in the second century AD. Curiously, this town was in the old Roman province of Tarraconense, whose capital city was the city now known as Tarragona.
